Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent, is a Non-Executive Director of QinetiQ Group, where he chairs the Risk and Corporate Social Responsibility Committee and the Security Committee. He is a Senior Advisor at Deloittes, specifically offering board level advice on Risk, Crisis Management and Reputation. He is Chairman of Plymouth Marine Laboratory and until recently Chairman of the innovative start-up renewable energy company WITT Ltd. He chairs the Advisory Board of the Danish Company, Risk Intelligence. He is a Senior Fellow and Advisory Board Member of the One Earth Future Foundation, promoting better maritime governance. Additionally he advises the underwater technology company Sonardyne.

Previously he has been a Senior Advisor to the investment bank Evercore, Shell Shipping and the Oil Companies International Maritime Forum. Specifically on leadership, he has advised Newton Europe on leadership development and application across the company. Also he has had leadership development opportunities with the EU, Dutch Multinationals, Macmillan Cancer Support, the Church of England and several Government Departments. He has also worked with Oliver Wyman on leadership and management of change issues. He regularly chairs international conferences and events, in particular for Defence IQ.

He is a member of the Kilfinan Group of Mentors for the charity sector, mentoring the CEO of a substantial national charity. He is Vice Chairman of the Annual National Seafarers Service held in St Paul's Cathedral. He is an ambassador for the submarine war memorial HMS Alliance and was a member of the fund raising committee to replace the Sea Cadet flagship TS Royalist James Burnell-Nugent is a Companion of the Institute of Leadership and Management.
